The Lao Gang Landfill is probably the biggest landfill in Asia, almost one-half of Shanghai waste is handled by the main the landfill, which occupies an area of 5 sq. km. The garbage arrive here by numerous garbage barges at a Garbage Dock were taking turns to be emptied. As the truck come and go from the dock, in the buried place tens of trash pickers searching recycling material in the rubbish inhaling noxious gases while wading knee-deep in fetid refuse. Mostly of them live just outside the landfill where they sell their "merchandise". Those migrant peasants can make far more money collecting plastic trash bags, tin cans and the rubber soles of shoes than they can as farmers or ordinary day laborers. *** Local Caption *** Trash pickers searching ih the rubbish.
