Recently Piacenza has become the Italian hub for the distribution of goods.
The strategic position, on the motorway junction north-south / east-west, makes Piacenza the most sought after place for logistics in Italy. The new expected railway freight yard at the logistic hub of the city, now endorsed by the Italian Railways, will multiply the attractiveness.
From Piacenza to Stradella (PV) is a swarm of warehouses and logistic parks. Farmland or shut down factories have given way, in the last decade, to the goods movement activities. Increasing the local labor force and giving force to the local economy, stalled by the crisis.
It is the mirror of a world that has changed and reflects today's society. We buy via the Internet more than you did a few years ago, we press a button on the computer and already the goods are on their way to our home. Possibly the same day. All this merchandise, to move quickly on the ground, has to be available, mainly placed in warehouses strategically located throughout the territory. There are also privileged channels for incoming goods: goods arriving by sea from Genoa or La Spezia, for instance, may be customs cleared in Piacenza.
There are huge sheds with thousands of objects: books, furniture, clothing, spare parts, shoes, toys, computers, phones, whatever. Everything is mechanized, marked to speed up to the fulfillment of an order on line. Whether it is a company or an individual.
The world of trade is changing, it is changing the process to satisfy it. Our territory it’s evolving from production economy to logistics economy. The landscape is changing, consequwntly: moving goods in deposits, by the hundreds of thousands of item ready to be shipped.
Where are all the goods? How are they sorted?
My intent is to show the broad stores and sheds that lie behind the online economy.
Viewing images of these spaces in a wide angle could show what lies behind an online purchase done via computer or smatphone and how it has changed the way we do trading today.
