The Porta Nuova neighborhood has undergone profound changes in recent years. The tower Unicredit designed by architect Cesar Pelli, the "Vertical Forest" by architect Stefano Boeri and the Pavilion of architect Michele De Lucchi are the spearhead. The square Gae Aulenti has become a center of attraction for the inhabitants and tourists. The streets in the vicinity, such as Corso Como or surrounding neighborhoods, such as Isola, have now more attractions and charm.

It was 2008, I was in Istanbul and I had some days off. Instead to visit again Istanbul, I decided to take the train towards north, towards Europe, to visit some Bulgarian city along the Black Sea. I fell in love with the Black Sea, I loved watching what was in this closed sea. In the next years I found the way to go back to Bulgaria again and then I went in Ukraine. My plan was to visit all the country along the Black Sea. Then, I do not know what has happened, but I never came back along the Black Sea. Now, after seeing so long the folder "Along the Black Sea" there, on my hard drive, I decided to see what I was doing over there.

Italian car giant Fiat has said it will cut 1,500 jobs in Poland because of the weak car market in Europe. Tichy, the Fiat Auto city in Poland. The city has grown substantially, in the 50's as a dormitory of Katowice. The neighborhoods have names of the alphabet, from A to Z. Even today, the districts are buildings that mark the decades in which they were built, the 50's, 60's, 70's. Some malls are one of the few community centers, the rest are ranks of buildings. Few people around during the week, the weekend is animated a little in the central area, close to Tychy hotel. Young people can just go in the near Katowice, where there is more life, more fun.

  • Last months of my father
    Last months of my father

I have photographed my father during his illness because I hadn't done it when I should have. I have photographed my father because I couldn't look at him without hiding behind the camera, withholding my emotions, postponing them to a private, secret thereafter. I have photographed suffering before, but then I was following my inner fire, holding my camera like a sword, now it had become my shield. His illness put a stop to the countless incomprehensions among us. There was no time for arguments anymore, only time to declare my love. My own children will not know who he was, will not hear his stories, will not drink from the same fountain of life that I drank from. It is like they will never know a part of me, the most important part. I had thought my father was forever, eternal. Even if I hated him. He was like a mirror to me, projecting my accusations, my fears, my hatred, staring at myself with my own eyes. In the summer we used to go visit the grandparents in Puglia, in the land where our blood comes from, their blood, my blood. The roots. Will my children understand who he was? Will I be able to pass them that strength, that character that they already have in their blood? Will they know where that energy comes from? Will they recognize the entity that something has passed from father to son? The blood, the roots.

  • Taranto a tough town
    Taranto a tough town
    36 images
A tough town, Taranto, always has been. A story with roots in Ancient Greece has reached today with the failure of the policy, the notification for the international rating in the city insolvent. The city, which had already its problems, is the disarray, the lack of confidence is ruling: rare successes, very few the chances, so many failures. The sudden industrialization in the 60's with the arrival of Italsider, today Ilva, and the second Navy Italian harbor and workers civil Arsenal, instilled energy into the city that had lived mainly on fishing, shellfish cultivation and agriculture . These were the years of the boom. But Ilva (the "il siderurgico" as it is called) was a thud. Of the thirty thousand workers in the late 60th it has gone to thirteen thousand today, the area is a source of pollution and cancer, the nearby cemetery of the district Tamburi is red by dust. The arsenal of the Mar Piccolo is going to be sold and the workers know that the golden days are long gone, about the future is better not to mention. Yet from the sea come the only news: the new military harbour that the Navy has opened in the Great Sea, and the new commercial port, the Polisettoriale. The Polisettoriale, run by a company in Taiwan, offers a bit of hope to young people whose only prospect seems the Ilva steel factory, emigration, or worse, to fight to finish in the most petty crime. Difficult areas such as Salinella, Taranto old town or the even harder "white houses" in Paolo VI give a sense of abandonment of citizens. The streets of downtown refurbished, or the waterfront graced by the council failed, have drained the coffers of the city. These works are not enough to citizens. A worker farmer of the famous mussels from Taranto says that the mussels are dying. With them his work. In Taranto, remained only the sun.

As Moscow's urban landscape continues to change, with soaring skyscrapers piercing the city skyline and restoration on historic buildings becoming more-and-more common, foreign curiosity of the Russian capital often focuses on the metropolitan center rather than the city's outskirts. I used the last stops on the city's metro system as a connect-the-dots perimeter map, investigating the fringes of the city, venturing off no more than 450 feet from each subway entrance to produce a photographic sketch of the "edges of Moscow."
